The art bookstore Motto, headed by Alexis Zavialoff, opened its first permanent store in a charming courtyard in Berlin-Kreuzberg in December 2008. Locations in other cities followed: Vilnius, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Moscow, Vancouver, Stuttgart, Athens, Seoul, Tokyo, and Paris. Now Graz is pleased to host the newest Motto bookstore, the only one in Austria: on 5 June 2014 the art bookstore is opening in the foyer of the Künstlerhaus KM–, Halle für Kunst & Medien.
Motto stands for a unique international network in the world of art publications. It promotes successful collaboration between publishers, libraries, and many different art institutions, such as Wiels in Brussels or the Kunsthalle Basel.
The continually growing number of publications sold by Motto currently comprises over 3,000 titles, including art books and magazines, artists’ publications, and also dated issues of select journals. In addition to collaboration with leading international publishers, the range has been expanded to include in-house publications, which now constitute the majority of the books offered.
Thanks to a carefully determined selection of publications that directly correlate with current exhibitions, Motto’s special concept enables visitors to reflect on and follow the Künstlerhaus KM– programme, thus fostering exploration, discussion, exchange.
Initially, a selection of approximately 100 titles will be offered at Motto Graz, which will keep growing in a steady process of acquiring new titles. Selected current Motto publications are presented as part of the series “An Art Day’s Night”.
