Since 1995 the artist LIA (born in Graz), a pioneer of Software and Net Art, has been producing videos, performances, software, installations, sculptures, projections, and digital applications. The basic material of her work is code, and in this context she translates concepts into formally elaborated structures that generate output in real time through reuse in a “machine.” In the process, her conceptual approach remains versatile and provides a contrast to the formality of the written code, since the formulation of the latter is based on precision—the process of translation between machine and artist can thus be considered a type of conservation process. LIA’s works fall back on the traditions of both drawing and painting, and they combine them with the aesthetics of the digital image world and algorithmic language.
