The Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien, is pleased to draw your attention to the exhibition "Studienraum Jörg Schlick." After a retrospective on the extensive œuvre of Jörg Schlick in 2015, the study room is dedicated to his biographical life stages and the presentation of the catalogue raisonné created by the Künstlerhaus accompanying the exhibition, the artist's first comprehensive monograph will be published by Buchhandlung Walther König, Cologne.
In his artistic work and far-reaching activities, Jörg Schlick (1951–2005, Graz) strongly encouraged his hometown to engage with contemporary art. Schlick dealt with both the social self-image as well as the political attitude and intellectual traditions in Graz. While the main focus of the retrospective was on examining the quality of works apart from Schlick's polarizing and posthumously mystified personality, the study room provides insight into the catalogue raisonné and thus, the opportunity to view the artist's complete œuvre. The detailed analysis of the artistic work gives hints to the seemingly inexhaustible creativity and impulses that were contained in Schlick—rich in contradictions and discontinuities, but then with recurring motifs and concepts.
At the center is the presentation of an extensive monographic catalogue, which includes texts by Diedrich Diederichsen, Elisabeth Fiedler, Martin Prinzhorn and Helene Romakin as well as numerous illustrations presenting Schlick and his work from an updated perspective. For further research, an accompanying catalogue of works and a database with 3,758 data records will be made available. With the "Study Room Jörg Schlick," the institution is opening its three-year long-term research work to support an active approach to the extensive work and a re-evaluation of the artist. The "Study Room Jörg Schlick" examines the artistic methods as well as Schlick's distinctive network thinking and cultural-political commitment, which he lived out locally and internationally. Accordingly, the intention of the study room is to develop tools and practices to continue research that provide knowledge and insights into the Zeitgeist of Schlick's generation as well as possible future perspectives for current artistic practice.
Additional materials such as personal documents, printed works, records, publications and documentation of exhibitions complete the presentation of Schlick’s biographical path. As special supplement the LP "Jörg Schlick in the mix" by the artist friend Albert Oehlen accompanies the catalogue, on which he reinterpreted in a remix pieces partly created in collaboration with Jörg Schlick.
Jörg Schlick participated actively at the Forum Stadtpark and steirischer herbst, among others. From 1996 to 2001 he was a visiting professor at the Technical University of Graz; in 2003 he taught at the FH Joanneum University of Applied Sciences. In 1997 he received the Honorary Award for the Visual Arts of the City of Graz, and in 2005 the Honorary Award for the Visual Arts of the County of Styria. The internationally successful artist exhibited in renowned museums throughout Europe: For example, at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, in 1993; the Museum Ludwig, Cologne in 1996; and the Musée d’art modern et contemporain, Geneva, in 2000, among others.
